Biodiversity Conservation
What We Do
PNG is one of only 17 megadiverse countries globally, containing over 5 percent of the world’s biodiversity in less than 1 percent of the world’s total land area. It also houses the third largest rainforest in the world, with unique flora and fauna. Some of the endemic wildlife include carnivorous mice, tree-climbing kangaroos, and giant rats. A large bird population of 730 identified species lives in PNG, as well as over 320 identified amphibian species and around 300 identified reptile species.
LGP has unmatched experience identifying, measuring, and conserving flora and fauna throughout the ecosystems of PNG. It builds on this experience to ensure the project uses the most up-to-date and appropriate techniques, such as participatory land- and marine-use plans, calculation of sustainable hunting thresholds, evidence-based reforestation, and designs of community livelihood programs.
Above all, LGP works to protect the natural systems on which humans rely. Through all activities, the project team considers the value and importance of intact ecosystems for human health and quality of life. The team will consider the impacts of human actions for every activity, taking actions that range from rejecting balloon decorations to taking extreme care in using rare feathers at events. Once there is a widespread understanding regarding good practices for humans co-existing with their ecosystems in these landscapes, LGP will work toward institutionalizing good practices in local and national institutions.
