USAID LGP celebrates International Women’s Day

March 8 is International Women’s Day (IWD), a global day celebrating women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements. For #iwd2024, the global campaign theme is #Inspireinclusion.
USAID PNG Lukautim Graun Program (LGP) also joined the celebrations supportIng inclusion in Papua New Guinea. USAID PNG LGP in partnership with one of its small grant recipient, organised a number of activities including Financial Literacy graduation to commemorating the day. Members of the Sunshine Women’s Business Group in Goroka, Eastern Highlands who earlier attended the Financial Literacy Training received their certificates. A total of 72 participants mostly females, from Gomehegu and Gepahina villages graduated with certificates. The Occasions was witnessed by the surrounding communities in Kama and business houses in Goroka. Betty Iveho, Manager Sunshine Women Business Group said “One of the goals for the Sunshine Women’s Business Group is to provide and support marginalized women in the community to provide an avenue to share their vision and goals to assist and this occasion was a dream come true for most of them. Now they look forward to practice what they have learnt in the training. Thank you, USAID, for coming right down to the heart of the community”
The graduates are vested with the basic knowledge of saving and budgeting and have a better understanding of the foundational financial skills required to create new enterprises and increase household and personal financial security, particularly for women. This is part of USAID’s commitment through partnership with CEFI to deliver financial literacy training for Papua New Guineans that focuses on the economic empowerment of people form marginalized populations, particularly women. USAID’s PNG LGP works in partnership PNG Government, local communities, and a range of implementing partners from the private sector, faith-based organizations, and civil society organizations to empower traditional landowners to sustainably manage their resources and particularly to economically empower women to be full participants in PNG’s economy. Improving people’s livelihood prospects helps communities to reduce pressure on forest resources and contribute to protecting PNG’s rich biodiversity for future generations.
