U.S Agency for International Development (USAID) through its PNG Lukautim Graun Program (LGP) aims to enhance the opportunity for women in Papua New Guinea (PNG) to participate in, contribute to, and benefit equitably from economic opportunities provided. This is part of USAID Women’s Global Development Prosperity (WGDP) Initiative which includes empowering women through equal opportunity within the workforce, in business development ventures and through entrepreneurship. As part of this initiative, Madang became the first province to have a poultry project rollout with a total of fourteen women groups and 200 individual women farmers and their households participating. To kick start this project, USAID LGP, in partnership with DOERS Agro Services conducted a two days training on poultry farming for 19 participants (13 women and 6 men), mainly leaders and representatives from cluster groups and CBOs from three districts, Sumkar, Middle Ramu and Raikos. The training was from July 11th-12th. The aim of the training was to equip participants, especially women and girls, with the basic knowledge of poultry farming including good waste management practices to mitigate and monitor wastes from chicken farming. The participants were taken through the whole process starting from the construction of a chicken house to identifying suitable market approaches. Participant, Karop Hilda Marom, who is a women’s Representative from Raikos District thanked USAID PNG LGP and Doers Agro Services stating that, “This is a first of its kind training that we (local mothers) have attended. The training has enhanced our previous knowledge of poultry farming and has motivated us to take up poultry business”.
Another participant, Emma Barrier, who is a Women’s Representative from Sumakar District also thanked USAID PNG LGP, stating that, “The training was explained to our level of understanding and we really appreciate the effort being put into making it possible for us. I have learnt a lot of new things about chicken brooding and I am eager to go back to share this knowledge with others in our communities in Sumkar.”
USAID LGP ensured that 19 participants representing three districts did not leave empty handed after the training. To assist them to venture into poultry farming, a total of 20 cartons of chicklets were divided among the participants. The participants are expected to use the knowledge acquired in the training to manage poultry projects as a micro enterprise in their respective villages. The beneficiaries will also use simple savings and budgeting knowledge to generate income from the poultry project and increased profit to enable savings. This will then be used as seed capital to open group accounts with an aim to save money to venture into other Micro, Small to Medium Enterprise activities.
