USAID-LGP Participate in PNG’s National Protected Areas Forum 2022

News Highlights June 3, 2022

USAID’s LGP was invited to participate in PNG’s 2022 National Protected Areas Forum and lead the discussion panel on sustainable livelihoods and biodiversity conservation. The forum was held in Port Moresby over five days from May 30 to June 3.

The LGP team included representatives from the programs implementing partners, Wildlife Conservation Society, The Nature Conservancy, Centre for Environmental Law and Community Rights, and The Tree Kangaroo Conservation Program.

LGP Chief of Party, Mr Maurice Knight said, ‘LGP improves livelihoods opportunities for people in rural and remote areas to reduce their reliance on unsustainable forest resource use. This leads to better outcomes for people in these communities and increases protection and conservation of PNG’s biodiversity. ‘There is no silver bullet to development, but collaboration can help. By working together, we can make significant progress towards protection and conservation of PNG’s rich biodiversity for the benefit of its people now and in the future.’ said Mr Knight.

The aim of the forum is to harness the collective knowledge and experience of stakeholders to help progress a way forward for the ongoing establishment and effective management protected areas in PNG.
